Calcite in Busycon Shell

$225.00

Specimen # 525010

Specimen Locality: Rucks Pit, Okeechobee County, Florida

Mineral Description: A specimen of calcite-replaced Busycon (whelk) sp. shell. While the Rucks pit is famous worldwide for their clams with unique form and beauty, occasionally a whelk shell is found. This one is the calcite-lined sand layer that formed inside of a Busycon shell. The majority of the shell is dissolved, but you can still see the form of the central spiral in the calcites. This specimen fluoresces and phosphoresces nicely. They are formed when groundwater dissolves shell material from a coquina matrix currounding clams and re-precipitates calcite in the interior (vug) of the shells. Height: 11 Width: 7.5 Depth: 4 cm
